Research Funding
Recently, the OGVG Research Committee has demanded a more grower-driven and structured process for allocation of research funds to projects with more immediate application and practical relevancy to commercial greenhouse operations in Ontario. As a result, a new research policy was developed and the previous Request for Proposals system has been replaced with the Request for Tender (RFT) process.
The research policy applies to funding of research projects by OGVG. In summary, the research policy and procedures state that:
- All priorities must meet OGVG’s Vision, Mission and Mandate, and fit into one of the Core Business areas.
- Projects are to be chosen in consideration of priorities and projects of other organizations such as those of other industry groups, and provincial, federal, and international government groups. Projects should avoid unnecessary duplication of other current or previous research.
- OGVG will not contribute more than 50% of funds which are also sponsored by other parties (Ie. other industry groups).
- OGVG will favour projects for which it may have partial or full ownership of the results and has a desire for research where patents or IP can be obtained.
RFT applications will be ranked by the Research Committee using a scoring system based on the following criteria: importance of research priority, duration of the project, feasibility (the project is applicable, valuable, and viable), the number of growers expected to benefit, and amount of acreage expected to benefit from the results.
