History of the Industry

The ancient Romans conducted the first experiments with greenhouse horticulture about 2,000 years ago. In the 19th century, during the Victorian period, the industry began to expand as it became possible to properly control ventilation, heating and irrigation.

Shortly after World War II, families from Italy and Holland came to Leamington, Ontario and started growing greenhouse vegetables. The area is currently enjoying 3rd and 4th generation growers and is known as the heart of the greenhouse industry in North America. Other Ontario greenhouses are located across the province, with many clustered in the Niagara area.
